On June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court passed a law that all states must give gay and lesbian couples the right to obtain a marriage license and allow them to marry. This is the law of the land now whether you agree with it or not! I respect everybody’s right to be with whoever they want to be with in this world. We all deserve to be happy! We all have the right to practice any type of religion in this country and that should be respected too! We all need to understand each other and the diversity within this country. I don’t support discrimination of any kind because we all have to live in this world.
This week the courts put Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis in jail for not issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples fo the last two months. I don’t think she should be in jail especially with more serious criminals need to be in jail. I believe that she should be removed from her position especially since she can’t follow the law. She believes in her faith and I totally understand her viewpoint! However, it’s the new law and anyone that sits in her position has to follow the law. I think what U.S. District Judge David Bunning did on Thursday was really wrong and to try to keep her in jail until she agrees to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples is sending the wrong message to me! Just remove Kim Davis out of position!
We have to honor the law of this country but we must also realize this is a new law and there are a lot of people who are dedicated to their religions and we must respect that and try not to punish people for their beliefs! I am starting to see that if someone speaks up against not believing in same-sex marriage that they are getting punished and picked on which isn’t good! Everyone has a right to believe and practice their beliefs as long as it doesn’t physically hurt or kill anyone. Majority of the Southern states are heavy with religion and are considered the “Bible belt” areas within the United States.
Let’s not punish someone for their religious beliefs because what we are really showing is that we are punishing people for their beliefs. Not everyone is going to agree with same-sex marriage and that should be okay. We also need to have state mandated classes for statewide government workers in understanding same-sex marriage and the new laws that they have to respect if they are going to hold positions like County Clerk. The way to changing mindsets is discussing issues with each other! Let’s not punish people for having different viewpoints but instead educate and possibly replace those that can’t follow the new laws! If we start placing religious people in jail for their beliefs than we are going to build more division in this country! Guess what, religious people have civil rights too! Just because a new law was passed doesn’t mean that it’s automatic accepted by everyone! Just look at the civil rights movement…we are still fighting today for civil rights in this world and trying to change people mindsets.
We need to be a little more understanding of everybody and their viewpoints and try to have conversations. I applaud anyone that takes a stand in what they believe in whether I approve or not as long as it doesn’t physically hurt or kill someone! Kim Davis isn’t a criminal but instead someone who is deeply religious and being condemned for her religious beliefs. We as a country have a lot of issues and we need to really do better! We have discrimination that is growing worse everyday in this country in a rapid pace! We can’t start getting upset over someone who was raised all their life to believe that same-sex marriage isn’t right! This law just passed and believe it or not there are a lot of people who are having a hard time with the new law especially with trying to tie it into their religion. Again, I hope the judge just remove Kim Davis from her position and let her out of jail. I am not a supporter of Kim Davis but I understand all the discussions around the same-sex marriage topic and I just feel more serious offenders should be in jail and that Kim Davis is taking a spot that could be held by a harsher criminal!
